According the EFSA, Sakae Naa is a Novel-Food (it's forbidden to sell as food or food-supplement):
NOVEL FOOD - According to the information available to Member States' competent authorities, this product was not consumed in the EU to a significant degree as a food before 15 May 1997. Therefore, a pre-market authorisation in accordance with Regulation (EU) 2015/2283 is required before it can be placed as food on the EU market.
Like Kratom, Sakae Naa or Combretum Quadrangulare is native to Southeast Asia. It belongs to the family Combretaceae, a genus that grows in tropical regions. It is a tall tree that can go up to 10 meters (32 ft).
The plant became very popular in Thailand after the kratom ban, thanks to its similar stimulant effects. In addition, it is used in traditional medicine to lower fever, treat dysentery, and remove parasites such as worms.As far as chemistry goes, the main component of Sakae Naa is combretol, a type of flavonoid. In addition, it contains other compounds such as other flavonoids and triterpenoids. Because the plant is relatively unknown, there is not much information about how Sakae Naa's components work on the system. Nevertheless, there are Chinese studies that show that the plant has certain liver-protective properties.
As mentioned above, Sakae Naa (according to Chinese studies) has protective effects on the liver. According to a 2020 study in mice, Combretum quadrangulare may also be useful for treating atopic eczema. Although this study was conducted in mice, the results are still promising.In Thailand, a dose of 10 grams (= 1 gram of our 10x extract) is maintained and this is said to give an energy boost of 2 to 4 hours.
